Nice One! Finding this article means you’re likely to be contemplating your career, and if training for a new career’s in your mind you’ve even now progressed more than almost everybody else. Are you aware that hardly any of us would say we are satisfied and happy at work – yet the vast majority of us will do absolutely nothing about it. We encourage you to be different and do something – you have the rest of your life to enjoy it.

It’s in your interests that before you start a training course, you discuss your plans with a person who knows the industry and can point you in the right direction. The right person will be able to assess your personal likes and dislikes and give you guidance on the right role for you:

* Are you hoping to be involved with others in the workplace? Is that as part of a team or with many new people? Maybe working on your own on specific tasks would give you pleasure?

* Are you thinking carefully about which sector you maybe could work in? (These days, it’s more important than ever to choose carefully.)

* How long a career do you hope to have once retrained, and can your chosen industry provide you with that possibility?

* Would you like the course you’re re-training in to be in an area where you believe you’ll remain employable up to retirement age?

Pay attention to the IT industry, that will be time well spent – you’ll find it’s one of the only growth areas in this country and overseas. In addition, salaries and benefits exceed most other industries.

At times individuals don’t catch on to what IT is all about. It’s ground-breaking, exciting, and means you’re doing your bit in the gigantic wave of technology affecting everyones lives in the 21st century. We’ve only just begun to get an inclination of how technology is going to shape our lives. Computers and the Internet will massively revolutionise how we regard and interrelate with the rest of the world over the coming decades.

Should receiving a good salary be high on your scale of wants, you will welcome the news that the regular income for a typical IT worker is a lot better than salaries in much of the rest of industry. Because the IT market sector is still growing nationally and internationally, one can predict that the search for well trained and qualified IT technicians will flourish for quite some time to come.

The way a programme is physically sent to you is often missed by many students. How many stages do they break the program into? And in what order and what control do you have at what pace it arrives? Individual deliveries for each training module one stage at a time, according to your exam schedule is the usual method of releasing your program. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you should take these factors into account: Students often discover that their training company’s standard order of study doesn’t suit. It’s often the case that a slightly different order suits them better. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done within their exact timetable?

Ideally, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – so you’ll have them all to come back to at any time in the future – irrespective of any schedule. Variations can then be made to the order that you attack each section if you find another route more intuitive.

Workshops can be portrayed as a strong aspect by a lot of trainers. When you talk to many IT students who have used them, you’ll likely realise that they’ve now become a major negative as they hadn’t properly considered the following:

* Loads of travelling to and from the workshop centre – sometimes very long trips.

* Weekday only accessibility with classes can be usual, and with two or three days required at a time, this is usually problematic for a lot of trainees who are working.

* Most of us find 4 weeks annual leave doesn’t go very far. Sacrifice a big chunk of this for study events and see how much more difficult it makes things.

* Taking into account the costs associated with delivering a workshop, a lot of training providers fill the classes up to the brim – not really ideal (and with less one-on-one time).

* Many trainees are trying to maintain a quick pace, but some like to take it easier and be allowed to set their own speed. This generates tension in most cases.

* Tot up the cost of all the travel, fares, accommodation, parking and food and you may be surprised (and not pleasantly). Trainees mention extra costs of between several hundred and a couple of thousand pounds. Work it out – and see for yourself.

* Study privacy can be high on the list of priorities to most students. You don’t want to throw away any job advancement, pay-rises or accomplishment at work while you’re training. If your work discovers you’re putting yourself through accreditation in a completely different market, what will they think?

* Don’t think it’s unusual for trainees not to put a question forward that they would like answered – purely because they’re surrounded by fellow attendees.

* Usually, events are virtually undoable, when you work or live away for part of the week.

It obviously makes a lot more sense to be trained when it suits you — not the training company – and utilise videos of instructors with interactive virtual-lab’s. Training can take place wherever it suits you. If you have a laptop, why not catch some fresh air in your garden as you work. Any issues that arise just get onto the live 24×7 support. You can go back and re-cover all the study modules as many times as you want to. There’s absolutely no need to jot down any notes because the class is available whenever you want it. The outcome: Reduced stress, saved money, and absolutely no travelling.

If you want Cisco training, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. The Cisco training is intended for individuals who need to know all about network switches and routers. Routers connect networks of computers to different networks of computers via the internet or dedicated lines.

Routers are linked to networks, therefore it’s vital to have prior knowledge of how networks function, or you’ll struggle with the training and be unable to do the work. Find training that features the basics on networks (CompTIA is ideal) prior to starting your CCNA.

Having the skills and knowledge in advance of starting the CCNA is crucial. So find an advisor who can tell you what else you need to know.

Most of us would love to think that our jobs will always be secure and our work futures are protected, however, the truth for the majority of jobs in the United Kingdom at the moment appears to be that security just isn’t there anymore. Whereas a fast growing sector, where there just aren’t enough staff to go round (as there is a growing shortfall of commercially certified professionals), creates the conditions for lasting job security.

The computing Industry skills shortfall around the United Kingdom currently stands at just over twenty six percent, according to the most recent e-Skills study. Meaning that for every four jobs that are available across IT, there are barely three qualified workers to perform that task. Fully trained and commercially educated new staff are thus at an absolute premium, and it seems it will continue to be so for many years longer. No better time or market settings could exist for getting trained into this hugely increasing and budding market.

A competent and specialised consultant (vs a salesman) will talk through your current situation. This is useful for calculating your study start-point. Sometimes, the starting point of study for a trainee with some experience is vastly different to someone without. Consider starting with some basic PC skills training first. It can brush up on your current abilities and make your learning curve a bit more manageable.

Charging for exams as an inclusive element of the package price and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a popular marketing tool with a good many training companies. But look at the facts:

They’ve allowed costings for it by some means. You can be assured it’s not a freebie – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. Trainees who take exams one at a time, paying for them just before taking them are much better placed to get through first time. They’re aware of what they’ve paid and so are more inclined to be up to the task.

Do your exams at a local pro-metric testing centre and find the best deal for you at the time. A lot of questionable training course providers net huge profits by getting paid for examinations upfront then hoping you won’t see them all through. Don’t forget, with ‘Exam Guarantees’ from most places – the company decides when you can do your re-takes. Subsequent exam attempts are only authorised at the company’s say so.

On average, exams cost approximately 112 pounds in the last 12 months via local VUE or Pro-metric centres throughout the country. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to get ‘Exam Guarantees’, when any student knows that what’s really needed is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

Many people don’t really get what IT means. It’s ground-breaking, exciting, and means you’re working on technology that will change our world over the next few decades. We’re at the dawn of beginning to get a handle on how this will truly impact our way of life. How we interact with the world will be significantly affected by computers and the internet.

If earning a good living is way up on your wish list, then you will be happy to know that the income on average for the majority of IT staff is significantly greater than salaries in most other jobs or industries. The search for well trained and qualified IT technicians is assured for many years to come, because of the constant development in the technology industry and the huge deficiency that we still have.

Commercially accredited qualifications are now, undoubtedly, beginning to replace the traditional academic paths into IT – but why is this the case? Industry is of the opinion that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, certified accreditation supplied for example by Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is far more effective and specialised – for considerably less. The training is effectively done by focusing on the particular skills that are needed (along with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) as opposed to trawling through all the background ‘extras’ that degrees in computing are prone to get tied up in – to pad out the syllabus.

Put yourself in the employer’s position – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What’s the simplest way to find the right person: Go through reams of different degrees and college qualifications from various applicants, asking for course details and what trade skills they’ve mastered, or choose particular accreditations that specifically match what you’re looking for, and make your short-list from that. The interview is then more about the person and how they’ll fit in – instead of having to work out if they can do the job.

by Jason Kendall

What can a student looking for certified training from Microsoft expect to come across? Obviously, training providers ought to have a number of routes that cover the range of Microsoft authorised training routes. Perhaps you’d like to talk through what you’re looking to do with a person who’s got industry experience – and if you haven’t come to a decision, then have some guidance on what sort of job would be right for you, based on your personality and ability level. Having selected the career path you want, a suitable training program needs to be chosen that’s reflects your needs. This can be personally tailored for your requirements.

A top of the range training course package will have fully authorised exam preparation packages. As most examination boards in IT come from the United States, you need to become familiar with their phraseology. It isn’t good enough simply going through the right questions – they have to be in the same format as the actual exams. Simulations and practice exams can be invaluable in helping you build your confidence – so when it comes to taking your actual exams, you don’t get uptight.

Sometimes people are under the impression that the tech college or university route is the way they should go. So why then are commercial certificates slowly and steadily replacing it? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, the IT sector has been required to move to the specialised training that can only be obtained from the actual vendors – in other words companies like Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe. Frequently this is at a far reduced cost both money and time wise. Patently, a certain quantity of relevant additional information has to be learned, but essential specialised knowledge in the exact job role gives a commercially trained student a huge edge.

The crux of the matter is this: Recognised IT certifications provide exactly what an employer needs – the title says it all: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Windows XP Administration and Configuration’. Consequently companies can look at the particular needs they have and what certifications are needed for the job.

Ignore any salesman that offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation to assess your abilities plus your experience level. Ensure that they have a wide-enough range of products from which they could provide you with what’s right for you. Remember, if you have some relevant accreditation or direct-experience, then you will often be able to commence studying further along than someone new to the industry. Commencing with a basic PC skills module first may be the ideal way to commence your IT training, depending on your current skill level.

Many commercial training providers will only offer basic 9am till 6pm support (maybe a little earlier or later on certain days); most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends. Many only provide email support (too slow), and phone support is usually just a call-centre that will take the information and email an instructor – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, when it’s convenient to them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re stuck with a particular problem and only have certain times available in which to do your studies.

If you look properly, you’ll find the very best companies which offer online direct access support 24×7 – even in the middle of the night. Seek out a trainer that gives this level of learning support. As only live 24×7 round-the-clock support gives you the confidence to make it.

A ridiculously large number of organisations only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and forget the reasons for getting there – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Your focus should start with where you want to get to – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle. You could be training for only a year and end up doing a job for a lifetime. Don’t make the mistake of finding what seems like an ‘interesting’ course only to spend 20 years doing a job you hate!

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and create a learning-plan from that – don’t do it the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal and ensure that you’re training for an end-result you’ll still be enjoying many years from now. Chat with an experienced professional that has a background in the industry you’re considering, and who’ll explain to you a detailed run-down of the kind of things you’ll be doing on a daily basis. Establishing this before beginning a learning program will save you both time and money.

In the fast-paced world we live in, support workers who have the ability to solve problems with computers and networks, along with giving ongoing advice to users, are essential in all areas of the business environment. Because of the complex nature of technology, more and more trained staff are being looked for to look after the many areas we’ve become dependent on.

The age-old way of teaching, with books and manuals, can be pretty hard going sometimes. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, find training programs that are on-screen and interactive. Where we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Find a course where you’re provided with an array of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, with the facility to practice your skills in interactive lab’s. You must ensure that you see courseware examples from each company you’re contemplating. They have to utilise video, demonstrations and various interactive elements.

Often, companies will only use just online versions of their training packages; and while this is acceptable much of the time, consider how you’ll deal with it when you don’t have access to the internet or you get a slow connection speed. It’s much safer to rely on physical CD or DVD discs that will not have these problems.

A number of trainees think that the school and FE college path is the way they should go. Why then is commercial certification slowly and steadily replacing it? Industry now recognises that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, official accreditation from the likes of Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA most often has much more specialised relevance – and a fraction of the cost and time. Higher education courses, as a example, become confusing because of too much loosely associated study – and a syllabus that’s too generalised. Students are then held back from learning the core essentials in sufficient depth.

What if you were an employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What’s the simplest way to find the right person: Trawl through a mass of different academic qualifications from several applicants, having to ask what each has covered and what vocational skills they have, or select a specialised number of commercial certifications that exactly fulfil your criteria, and then choose your interviewees based around that. You can then focus on how someone will fit into the team at interview – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

A expert and specialised advisor (in contrast with a salesperson) will ask questions and seek to comprehend your current level of ability and experience. There is no other way of working out the starting point for your education. With some real-world experience or base qualifications, your starting-point of learning is very different to someone completely new. Working through a basic PC skills module first may be the ideal way to get into your IT program, but depends on your skill level.

Proper support should never be taken lightly – ensure you track down something providing 24×7 full access, as anything less will not satisfy and will also impede your ability to learn. Find a good quality service where you can receive help at any time you choose (no matter if it’s in the middle of the night on a weekend!) You want 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not simply some messaging service that means you’re consistently being held in a queue for a call-back – probably during office hours.

Be on the lookout for study programmes that have multiple support offices around the globe in several time-zones. All of them should be combined to offer a simple interface as well as 24×7 access, when it’s convenient for you, without any problems. Always choose a trainer that gives this level of learning support. Because only live 24×7 round-the-clock support provides the necessary backup.

There are colossal changes washing over technology over the next generation – and it only gets more exciting every day. There are people who believe that the technological revolution we’ve had over recent years is lowering its pace. All indicators point in the opposite direction. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and the internet in particular will become an increasingly dominant part of our lives.

If money is around the top on your scale of wants, then you will appreciate the fact that the usual remuneration of IT employees in general is much higher than salaries in the rest of the economy. The need for certified IT specialists is a fact of life for quite some time to come, due to the continuous increase in the technology industry and the huge skills gap that remains.

In total, there are 4 A+ examinations and specialised sectors, but you only have to get certified in 2 to be thought of as qualified. This is why the majority of training providers simply offer two. But allowing you to learn about all 4 options will provide you with a far deeper level of understanding of it all, something you’ll discover is vital in professional employment.

Passing the A+ exam on its own will allow you to mend and maintain computers and Macs; ones that are most often not part of a network – which is for the most part the home market. Perhaps you see yourself as someone who is a member of a large organisation – fixing and supporting networks, build on A+ with Network+, or follow the Microsoft route – MCP’s, MCSA or MCSE because it’s necessary to have a deeper understanding of how networks work.

Incorporating exams up-front and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a common method with a good many training companies. But look at the facts:

You’ll be charged for it ultimately. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – it’s just been rolled into the price of the whole package. For those who want to get a first time pass, you must pay for one exam at a time, prioritise it appropriately and give the task sufficient application.

Doesn’t it make more sense to not pay up-front, but when you’re ready, not to pay any mark-up to a college, and to take it closer to home – rather than possibly hours away from your area? Is there a good reason to pay interest on a bigger loan than is necessary because you’ve paid early for exam fees when there was no need to? A lot of profit is netted by organisations getting money in early for exam fees – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken. Re-takes of previously unsuccessful exams via organisations with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. You will be required to do mock exams until you’ve proven that you’re likely to pass.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is remiss – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will really guarantee success.

Being a part of the cutting-edge of new technology really is electrifying. You personally play your part in defining the world to come. Computing technology and communication via the internet will dramatically change the direction of our lives over the coming years; to a vast degree.

The standard IT technician in Great Britain will also receive significantly more than fellow workers in much of the rest of the economy. Average salaries are some of the best to be had nationwide. It seems there is a lot more room for IT sector development in Great Britain as a whole. The industry is continuing to expand hugely, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s highly unlikely that there’ll be any kind of easing off for years to come.

Please understand this most important point: You absolutely must have proper 24×7 instructor and mentor support. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t adhere to this. Locate training schools with proper support available at any time of day or night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Make sure it’s always direct-access to qualified mentors and tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re waiting for tutors to call you back when it’s convenient for them.

The very best programs opt for an online 24×7 package involving many support centres from around the world. You will be provided with an interface that seamlessly selects the best facility available no matter what time of day it is: Support when you need it. Never make the mistake of compromise where support is concerned. Most trainees who throw in the towel, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).

We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person – a ‘hands-on’ personality type. Usually, the painful task of reading endless manuals is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if books just don’t do it for you. Research over recent years has always shown that an ‘involved’ approach to study, where we utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Find a course where you’ll receive a library of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, with the facility to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills. You really need to look at some example materials from each company you’re contemplating. Be sure that they contain instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s.

Select physical media such as CD or DVD ROM’s wherever available. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

Watch out that all qualifications that you’re considering are commercially relevant and are the most recent versions. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are not normally useful in gaining employment. If your certification doesn’t come from a company like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco, then it’s likely it won’t be commercially viable – as no-one will have heard of it.

What are the sort of things you’d expect the finest training organisations accredited by Microsoft to provide a trainee in Britain in this day and age? Patently, the finest training tracks certified by Microsoft, presenting a range of courses to lead you towards various areas of industry. In addition, you may want to get advice on the careers available to you after you’ve completed your training, and the type of individual such a career may be appropriate for. Lots of people feel happier if they can be advised on what would suit them individually. Make sure your course is designed to your ability level and skill set. A quality company will make sure that your training track is relevant to the status you wish to achieve.

A top of the range training package will also offer wholly authorised simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Often students can find themselves confused by practicing questions for their exams that are not from authorised sources. Often, the phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s vital that you know this. Practice exams will prove very useful as a resource to you – so much so, that at the real deal, you will be much more relaxed.

The old fashioned style of teaching, involving piles of reference textbooks, can be pretty hard going sometimes. If you’re nodding as you read this, look for learning programmes that are multimedia based. Where possible, if we can involve all our senses in the learning process, then we often see hugely increased memory retention as a result.

Fully interactive motion videos utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s beat books hands-down. And they’re a lot more fun to do. Any company that you’re considering should be able to show you some simple examples of their courseware. You should hope for instructor-led videos and interactive areas to practice in.

Plump for disc based courseware (On CD or DVD) in all circumstances. You’re then protected from broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.

It’s so important to understand this key point: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 support from professional instructors. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t follow this rule rigidly. Look for training with help available at all hours of the day and night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) You want 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back – probably during office hours.

The best training colleges provide a web-based round-the-clock service pulling in several support offices throughout multiple time-zones. You’ll have a simple interface that seamlessly accesses whichever office is appropriate any time of the day or night: Support available as-and-when you want it. Don’t accept second best where support is concerned. The vast majority of trainees that fall by the wayside, are in that situation because they didn’t get the support necessary for them.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, very visibly, already replacing the more academic tracks into IT – but why is this happening? With fees and living expenses for university students climbing ever higher, together with the IT sector’s growing opinion that vendor-based training is often far more commercially relevant, there has been a big surge in CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA accredited training programmes that provide key skills to an employee for considerably less. Patently, a certain quantity of relevant additional detail needs to be learned, but focused specialisation in the particular job function gives a commercially trained person a distinct advantage.

When an employer knows what areas need to be serviced, then they simply need to advertise for the particular skill-set required. Commercial syllabuses are set to exacting standards and do not vary between trainers (like academia frequently can and does).

Being a part of the information technology industry is one of the more stimulating and innovative industries that you can get into right now. Being a member of a team working on breakthroughs in technology is to be a part of the massive changes affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. Computing technology and communication through the internet is going to radically shape the direction of our lives in the future; remarkably so.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored either – the usual income throughout Britain for an average man or woman in IT is considerably better than in the rest of the economy. Odds are you’ll make a whole lot more than you’d expect to earn doing other work. With the IT marketplace developing year on year, it’s predictable that demand for appropriately qualified IT professionals will remain buoyant for decades to come.

As you've arrived here it's probable that you'd like to enter the world of computers and you fancy taking your MCSE, or you're already a professional and it's apparent that you can't get any further without a qualification such as MCSE.

by Jason Kendall

As you’ve arrived here it’s probable that you’d like to enter the world of computers and you fancy taking your MCSE, or you’re already a professional and it’s apparent that you can’t get any further without a qualification such as MCSE.

During your research, you will notice training companies that compromise their offerings by failing to use the latest version from Microsoft. Steer clear of this type of college as it will create challenges for you at exam time. If your knowledge is of an out-of-date syllabus, it could be impossible to pass. Don’t be pushed into a course for MCSE without the right advice. Find a company that will ensure you are on the best course for meeting your goals.

Commercial certification is now, very visibly, beginning to replace the older academic routes into the IT industry – so why has this come about? Industry now acknowledges that for an understanding of the relevant skills, certified accreditation from the likes of CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA is closer to the mark commercially – saving time and money. The training is effectively done through concentrating on the skill-sets required (alongside an appropriate level of related knowledge,) as opposed to spending months and years on the background detail and ‘fluff’ that degrees in computing are prone to get tied up in (to fill up a syllabus or course).

Just as the old advertisement said: ‘It does what it says on the label’. Employers simply need to know what they need doing, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Some training providers offer a Job Placement Assistance facility, to assist your search for your first position. Don’t get overly impressed with this service – it’s quite easy for companies marketing departments to overplay it. At the end of the day, the need for well trained IT people in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

However, don’t wait till you’ve qualified before getting your CV updated. As soon as your training commences, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. Often junior support roles are got by people (who’ve only just left first base.) If you’d like to get employment in your home town, then it’s quite likely that a specialist locally based employment agency can generally be of more use than a centralised service, because they are much more inclined to be familiar with local employment needs.

In a nutshell, as long as you put the same commitment into landing your first IT position as into training, you won’t have any problems. A number of trainees bizarrely spend hundreds of hours on their learning program and then call a halt once they’ve got certified and seem to expect employers to find them.

It’s important to understand: the training itself or a qualification isn’t what this is about; the job or career that you’re getting the training for is. Too many training companies place too much importance on just the training course. It’s a sad fact, but thousands of new students commence training that sounds fabulous from the sales literature, but which provides a job that doesn’t satisfy. Talk to many university students for a real eye-opener.

Take time to understand your leanings around earning potential and career progression, and if you’re ambitious or not. You should understand what will be expected of you, which exams they want you to have and where you’ll pick-up experience from. Seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor, even if you have to pay – it’s much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning whether a chosen track will suit, instead of finding out following two years of study that you’ve picked the wrong track and now need to go back to square one.

Quite often, students have issues with a single courseware aspect usually not even thought about: The way the training is divided into chunks and sent out to you. Most companies will sell you a program typically taking 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you complete each section or exam. On the surface this seems reasonable – until you consider the following: Often, the staged breakdown prescribed by the provider doesn’t suit you. What if you find it hard to complete every element within the time limits imposed?

Truth be told, the best solution is to have a copy of their prescribed order of study, but get everything up-front. Everything is then in your possession if you don’t manage to finish within their ideal time-table.

The world of information technology is one of the more electrifying and revolutionary industries that you can get into right now. To be dealing with leading-edge technology is to be a part of the massive changes affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. We’ve barely started to get a feel for how technology is going to shape our lives. Technology and the web will profoundly revolutionise how we see and interact with the world as a whole over the next few years.

The typical IT technician throughout Britain has been shown to earn significantly more than fellow workers in other market sectors. Average remuneration packages are some of the best to be had nationwide. Demand for properly certified IT professionals is assured for a good while yet, thanks to the continuous development in the technology industry and the very large shortage still present.

Were it not for a continuous flood of knowledgeable PC and network support staff, business in the United Kingdom (and around the world) would be likely to be brought to its knees. Therefore, there’s an ever growing demand for technically able people to support both the systems and the users themselves. Our country’s need for increasing numbers of skilled and qualified individuals grows, as we turn out to be vastly more reliant on PC’s in these modern times.

Every program under consideration has to build towards a properly recognised exam at the end – and not a worthless ‘in-house’ piece of paper. From a commercial standpoint, only top businesses like Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (to give some examples) will get you into the interview seat. Nothing else hits the mark.

A capable and practiced advisor (in contrast with a salesperson) will talk through your current situation. This is vital for establishing the point at which you need to start your studies. If you have a strong background, or perhaps a bit of work-based experience (some industry qualifications maybe?) then it could be that your starting point will vary from someone who is just starting out. Commencing with a basic PC skills course first can be the best way to get up and running on your IT program, depending on your current skill level.

Have you recently questioned your job security? For most people, this only rears its head when something goes wrong. Unfortunately, the painful truth is that true job security simply doesn’t exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us. Where there are rising skills deficits together with escalating demand though, we always reveal a newer brand of security in the marketplace; driven by the conditions of constant growth, businesses struggle to find the staff required.

A rather worrying UK e-Skills analysis demonstrated that more than 26 percent of all available IT positions remain unfilled mainly due to an appallingly low number of properly qualified workers. It follows then that for every four jobs that exist in computing, businesses can only locate trained staff for 3 of the 4. Highly skilled and commercially accredited new workers are thus at a resounding premium, and in all likelihood it will stay that way for many years to come. With the market developing at such a rate, it’s unlikely there’s any better market worth taking into account as a retraining vehicle.

Many companies only concern themselves with gaining a certificate, and completely avoid the reasons for getting there – getting yourself a new job or career. Always begin with the end in mind – don’t make the journey more important than where you want to get to. Never let yourself become part of the group who set off on a track that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – and end up with a certification for an unrewarding career path.

You must also consider what your attitude is towards career progression and earning potential, and if you’re ambitious or not. It makes sense to understand what the role will demand of you, which particular exams are needed and how you’ll gain real-world experience. Have a conversation with an experienced industry professional that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and who’ll explain to you an in-depth explanation of what tasks are going to make up a typical day for you. Getting all these things right well before beginning a training path will save you both time and money.

It’s essential to have the current Microsoft (or any other key organisation’s) accredited exam simulation and preparation packages. Steer clear of depending on non-official exam preparation systems. The terminology of their questions is often somewhat different – and this leads to huge confusion in the actual examination. Clearly, it’s very important to ensure that you’ve thoroughly prepared for your final certified exam prior to going for it. Rehearsing ‘mock’ tests logs the information in your brain and saves you time and money on failed exams.

by Jason Kendall

If you’re ready to get certified at the MCSA level of study, the latest courses available are based on CD and DVD ROM’s using interactive, hands-on study. So if you have a certain amount of knowledge but are hoping to formalise your skills with certification, or are new to the industry, there are interactive MCSA training programs to cater for you. For a newcomer to the industry, it’s likely to be vital to improve your skill-set ahead of getting involved in your MCP exams that are necessary to become qualified at the MCSA level. Find a company that will create an ideal program to suit your requirements – with industry experts who will work with you to guarantee that your choices are good ones.

Often, students don’t think to check on a vitally important element – the way the company actually breaks down and delivers the courseware, and into how many bits. Delivery by courier of each element one stage at a time, as you pass each exam is the normal way of receiving your courseware. While sounding logical, you should take these factors into account: What would happen if you didn’t finish each and every module at the required speed? Sometimes their preference of study order won’t be as easy as some other structure would for you.

To be in the best situation you would have all the training materials couriered to your address right at the beginning; the entire thing! Thus avoiding any future problems that could impede your capacity to get everything done.

Doing your bit in the cutting-edge of new technology is as thrilling as it comes. You become one of a team of people creating a future for us all. We’ve barely started to get an inclination of how technology will influence everything we do. Technology and the web will significantly alter how we see and interrelate with the rest of the world over the coming years.

Wages in the IT sector aren’t to be ignored moreover – the usual income throughout Britain for an average man or woman in IT is considerably higher than average salaries nationally. It’s a good bet that you’ll earn a whole lot more than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries. It’s no secret that there is a substantial UK-wide requirement for trained and qualified IT technicians. Also, as growth in the industry shows little sign of contracting, it looks like this pattern will continue for quite some time to come.

Far too many companies are all about the certification, and completely avoid what it’s all actually about – which is of course employment. You should always begin with the final destination in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination. Students often train for a single year but end up performing the job-role for decades. Avoid the mistake of taking what may be a program of interest to you only to spend 20 years doing a job you hate!

Get to grips with what you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This will influence what precise accreditations you will need and what industry will expect from you in return. Have a chat with a professional advisor who has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and is able to give you a detailed run-down of the kind of things you’ll be doing on a daily basis. Researching these areas well before you start on any learning program makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?

Frequently, the normal IT hopeful has no idea where to start with IT, let alone which sector is worth considering for retraining. Since having no commercial background in Information Technology, how could any of us know what anyone doing a particular job actually does? Reflection on several factors is vital if you need to reveal the right solution that will work for you:

* Personalities play a starring part – what gets you ‘up and running’, and what are the things that you really dislike.

* Why you’re looking at getting involved with computing – is it to triumph over a particular goal such as working for yourself for instance.

* Your earning needs that guide you?

* When taking into account all that IT encompasses, you really need to be able to understand what’s different.

* You’ll also need to think hard about the level of commitment that you will set aside for your training.

To completely side-step all the jargon and confusion, and find the best path to success, have an informal chat with an industry expert and advisor; someone who can impart the commercial reality whilst covering the certifications.

Think about the points below and pay great regard to them if you think that over-used sales technique about an ‘Exam Guarantee’ sounds great value:

You’re paying for it one way or another. It certainly isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. The fact is that when students fund each progressive exam, at the time of taking them, they will be much more likely to qualify each time – as they are conscious of their payment and their application will be greater.

Find the best exam deal or offer available when you take the exam, and keep hold of your own money. You’ll also be able to choose where to do your exams – so you can find somewhere local. A lot of so-called credible training companies make huge profits by getting paid for examinations upfront and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken. You should fully understand that re-takes through companies with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are always heavily controlled. You will be required to do mock exams until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

Due to typical VUE and Prometric tests in the United Kingdom costing around 112 pounds, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. Why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra at the beginning of your training? Consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

by Jason Kendall

Selecting an IT training program that equates to industries needs is vital in today’s economy. But it’s also just as relevant to discover one that you can cope with, that matches your abilities and personality. There are courses covering Microsoft User Skills up to Web Design, Databases, Programming and Networking. There’s a great deal of choice and so it’s probably best to chat to an experienced advisor prior to deciding which way to go: don’t make a guess and learn about a subject for a job you’d actually hate!

By concentrating on service and delivery, training companies now exist with modern courses that blend the finest training and support for considerably less money than is charged by more out-dated organisations.

One crafty way that training providers make a big mark-up is by charging for exams up-front then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status. This sounds impressive, till you look at the facts:

It’s very clear we’re still paying for it – it’s quite obvious to see that it’s been inserted into the gross price invoiced by the training company. It’s definitely not free – don’t think these companies are so generous with their money! It’s everybody’s ambition to qualify on the first attempt. Entering examinations in order and paying for them just before taking them makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you put the effort in and are mindful of the investment you’ve made.

Take your exams somewhere close to home and go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready. Paying upfront for examinations (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is madness. It’s not your job to boost the training company’s account with extra money of yours just to give them more interest! Some will be pinning their hopes on the fact that you will never make it to exams – then they’ll keep the extra money. Pay heed to the fact that, with most ‘Exam Guarantees’ – the company decides when you can re-take the exam. Subsequent exam attempts are only authorised at the company’s say so.

Due to typical VUE and Prometric exams costing in the region of 112 pounds in this country, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. There’s no sense in throwing away maybe a thousand pounds extra at the start of your studies. Commitment, effort and practice with quality exam preparation systems are the factors that really get you through.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always proper direct-access 24×7 support through dedicated instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support. Avoid those companies which use messaging services ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during standard office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and need an answer now.

Keep your eyes open for study programmes that have multiple support offices from around the world. All of them should be combined to provide a single interface and also 24 hours-a-day access, when you need it, without any problems. Find a training company that goes the extra mile. As only 24×7 round-the-clock live support truly delivers for technical programs.

A top of the range training package will undoubtedly have accredited simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Steer clear of relying on non-official exam preparation questions. Their phraseology is often somewhat different – and this leads to huge confusion when the proper exam time arrives. Why don’t you analyse your depth of understanding through tests and simulated exams to prepare you for taking the actual exam.

Students often end up having issues because of one area of their training very rarely considered: How the training is broken down and delivered to your home. Most companies will sell you a 2 or 3 year study programme, and courier the materials in pieces as you complete each exam. On the surface this seems reasonable – until you consider the following: Students often discover that their providers usual training route doesn’t suit. Sometimes, it’s more expedient to use an alternative order of study. Perhaps you don’t make it at the pace they expect?

In an ideal situation, you’d ask for every single material to be delivered immediately – meaning you’ll have all of them to come back to in the future – at any time you choose. This allows a variation in the order that you complete each objective as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

Usually, trainers will provide a shelf full of reference manuals. This can be very boring and not ideal for achieving retention. Research over recent years has repeatedly shown that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is much more conducive to long-term memory.

Learning is now available in disc format, so you can study at your own computer. Video streaming means you can watch instructors demonstrating how it’s all done, and then have a go at it yourself – in an interactive lab. Always insist on a look at some courseware examples from your training provider. The package should contain instructor videos, demonstrations, slide-shows and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

Often, companies will only use purely on-line training; sometimes you can get away with this – but, consider what happens when you don’t have access to the internet or you get slow speeds and down-time etc. A safer solution is the provision of CD and DVD ROM materials which removes the problem altogether.
